The tapestry was probably produced in a workshop in Germany, perhaps Dresden or Berlin, by French Huguenot weavers who had fled France after the infamous Edict of Nantes in 1685. Both garden and genre scenes were immensely popular subjects for tapestries and this example, with its stately fountain and trees offset by the humorous peasants, combines both.
